The Vigilant

Background

The Vigil of Stendarr is an order of holy warriors who fight in the name of the divine Stendarr. Vigilants can be found journeying across Tamriel in their dedication to wiping out Daedra and any other abominations such as vampires. werewolves and witches. This build is based upon Vigilant Tolan who you encounter talking to Isran when you first enter Fort Dawnguard. Vigilant Tolan wields a warhammer rather than a mace.


Weapons

Any two-handed weapon you can get in Helgen. Then join the companions. If you only do the first quest you don't know the Circle are Werewolves so this works lore wise. You can then take a Steel Warhammer on top of a set of drawers near the steps to the Living Quarters in Jorrvaskyr. Then go join the Dawnguard once you are level 10 and take a Dawnguard Warhammer from the Battlements of Fort Dawnguard.

Paralysis and absorb health as this will occasionally paralyse enemies, it has a 26% chance per hit, and absorb health to keep you fighting without needing to switch to to a Restoration spell. Please note that absorbs do not work on Dwemer Automatons.


Armor

The build is best played with a full set of heavy armour until your crafting gear is made and you can enchant and smith your gear to the maximum. At this point, you switch a Mage Hood, Novice Robes of Alteration, Steel Plate Gauntlets and Steel Plate Boots.

The Mage Hood can be purchased from Colette at the College of Winterhold. The Novice Robes of Alteration from Tolfdir who is also at the College or from Radient Raiment in Solitude.

The damage reduction cap for armour cannot be met with this build as 3 armour pieces are needed to achieve that. However with the Gauntlets, boots and Ebonyflesh running a damage reduction of 78% can be achieved. The damage reduction cap is 80%.


Spells

Alteration for virtually all the spells and Restoration for heals


Standing Stones

The Lover Stone for skill building as a mix of Warrior and Mage skills will be used simultaneously in combat and then the Atronach Stone once the Atronach perk is acquired.


Shrines

Use a Shrine of Stendarr to increase blocking by 10% for roleplay although a Shrine of Talos is more useful.


Shouts

Unrelenting Force (Force - Balance - Push)

Location: Just follow the main story quests

Staggers enemies.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies. I use this to replacing running at enemies so I have more stamina to do power attacks.


Character Creation

Female Imperial

Orcs have the best skill match for the build but I wanted it to be a Human build like Vigilant Tolan, who is a Nord, so I went with an Imperial as they have a 5 point skill boost over Nords.

Place attribute points at 0/3/1. At level 59 which is required for all the perks the attributes are:

Talk to the Steward in Dragonsreach to get a quest to investigate an assassination attemp on the Jarl. After reading the buiness ledger at Arcadia's Cauldron go the Whiterun Stables and on the body of a stablehand is a Detect Life sepllbook. This can be used to level Alteration. With the final gear cast this with both hands to level up Alteration twice as fast.


Conjuration

Illusion

Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion.

With spell absorption use Circle of Protection for unlimited magicka when levelling mage skills.

With the Sallow Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased. Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Fly Amanita and Dragon's Tongue can be found at Kynesgrove, which is just to the south of Windhelm. Fly Amanita are numerous in the mine. There’s a lot of Scaly Pholiota to the south of Ivarstead. There's a path to Ivarstead through the mountains from Helgen.


Potion of Fortify Alteration

Effects Fortify Alteration Alteration spells last 170% longer

Grass Pods are numerous on the northern coastline of Skyrim. River Betty can be found in rivers, lakes and fish barrels. If you want to make this potion you will need to hunt for the ingredients rather than then being at Goldenhills Plantation.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Stoneflower Petals & Snowberries
Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
