Background

Sometimes it takes a monster to kill a monster. Grim Hunters undergo a dark ritual to enhance their physical abilities in order to gain a dark, unnatural power to destroy their foes.

The build was inspired by the D&D alternative ranger class by laserllama on GMbinder.

Weapons

Any Dagger along the way and then a Daedric Dagger as the final weapon. No enchantments are on the dagger so you can use Elemental Fury.

There’s a Daedra Heart in the office area outside Kodlak’s room in Jorvaskyr if you need one to craft a Daedric Dagger. You can grab and carry it to the end of the corridor next to the door to the main hall and then take it and leave the area very quickly before anyone notices.


Armor

Craft a set of Leather Scout armor as soon as you can. The final gear is. Vampire Hood, Dawnguard Light Armor, Dark Gauntlets and Boots.

A Vampire Hood can be acquired in Bloodchill Manor.

The Dawnguard Light Armor requires you to Complete the New Order quest to get Gunmar as a member of the Dawnguard.

Spells

Alteration for utility and Paralysis spells. Restoration for heals.


Standing Stones

Any stone while levelling and the Atronach Stone once the Atronach perk has been acquired.


Shrines

Use a shrine of Talos for 20% cooldown to shouts.


Shouts

Elemental Fury (Air - Battle - Grace)

Location: : Dragontooth Crater, Shriekwind Bastion, just a bit beyond the Statue of Meridia.

Significantly increases the speed of your weapons as long as they are not enchanted.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female Redguard

Dark Elf come out top for this build with a 30 point skill boost. Imperials and Redguard are second on 25/35. I went for Redguard because it fits the look I wanted to achieve better than the other races.

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. All Dwemer Automatons are considered male.


Attribute Distribution

Place attribute points at 0 / 2 / 1. At level 63 which is required for all the perks the attributes are:

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or Daedra, can be seen through walls
Paralysis Rune Adept Cast on a nearby surface, it explodes when enemies are nearby, immobilizing them for 8 seconds
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds
Paralyze Expert Targets that fail to resist are paralyzed for 10 seconds

The Detect Life spellbook can be obtained in Whiterun by taking to the Steward in Dragonsreach and following the quest to the Stables.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem

Soul Trap is used to level Conjuration and also fill soul gems.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second
Unbounded Storms Expert Targets in melee range take 40 shock damage per second to Health, and half that to Magicka. Random lightning strikes deal an additional 30 damage

Unbounded Storms is purely used as a means to level Destruction very quickly so you can get the Rune Master perk.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.

Courage can be used to level illusion.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second
Healing Hands Apprentice Heals the target 10 points per second, but not undead, atronachs, or machines
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead

Grand healing is used to fully replenish your stamina even if your health is full.


Enchantments

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

With the Sallow Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased. Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.


Alchemy

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

All of the ingredients can be found in or around Whiterun.


Potion of Fortify Carry Weight

Effects Fortify Carry Weight Carrying capacity increases by 170 for 300 seconds
Regenerate Stamina Stamina regenerates 213% faster for 300 seconds
Fortify Illusion Illusion spells are170% stronger for 60 seconds
Restore Magicka Restores 266 points of Magicka

All the Mora Tapinella you need are on the way from Helgen to Whiterun. Scaly Philiota can be found near the Alchemists Hut if you travel towards Ivarstead from Helgen. Steel-Blue Entoloma are from Khajiit merchants.


Poison of Lingering Damage Health

Ingredients Deathbell, Imp Stool & Mora Tapeinella
Effects Lingering Damage Health Drains the target’s Health by 43 points per second for 10 seconds
Damage Health Damages the target’s Health by 128 points

Talk to Farengar in Dragonsreach about being the only wizard in Whiterun. Agree to an take the Frost Salts to Arcadia and do so. Now you can collect 7 Deathbell and 1 Imp Stool for free. The remining Deathbell are on the secret lab at the farm. The Remaining 6 Imp Stool are in Reachwater Rock to the south of Markarth. The Mora Tapinella you need are on the route from Helgen to Whiterun.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Stoneflower Petals & Snowberries
Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
