Unseen Seer

High Elf - Staff - Heavy - Mage

Background

Mysterious and elusive, the unseen seer trades in secrets. Subterfuge is their business, in the same way that death is an assassin’s business, and they use magic to gather other people’s secrets.

I based this on a Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition prestige class. I was limited in what I could do relative to the class in D&D with as the closest spells to the Divination school are Detect Life, Detect Dead and Clairvoyance. The premise of the class is to know what is going on and avoid trouble and alough the calm spells fit the role better you do need to kill things in Skyrim so I decided to go the Frenzy route instead to use your stolen secrets to manipulate others into attacking the comrades. This avoided the build from being another Destruction mage and I purposefully kept the Destruction spell cost reduction lighter than I normally would do softly encourage this.


Weapons

Any Destruction staff as a backup. I made a Wooden Staff of Thunderbolt but never needed to use it.


Armor

Heavy armor and Robes or Illusion or Robes of Conjuration and Illusion at the start of the game. The final gear is a Archmage Robes, Madness Boots and Madness Gauntlets.

The Archmage Robes are awarded upon completion of the College of Winterhold faction main quests.

The Madness Boots and Gauntlets can be crafted with the Ebony Smithing perk, 5 Madness Ingots, 2 Ebony Ingots, 4 leather strips This means you need 10 Madness Ore. To unlock the ability to craft the Madness items the following has to be done.

The quest chain can be started by talking to Ri’Saad who travels between Whiterun and Markarth and once completed all Khajiit caravans have a chance to sell Madness Ore.


Spells

Alteration for Utility spells. Destruction for shock spells. Illusion for Frenzy spells and Invisibility. Restoration for heals.


Standing Stones

Use the Atronach Stone for 50% spell absoption, 50 magicka but -50% magicka regeneration.


Shrines

Use a Shrine of Talos for the 20% reduction to shout cooldowns.


Shouts

Become Ethereal (Fade - Spirit - Bind)

Location: Ironbind Barrow, Lost Valley Redoubt, Ustengrav (The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller)

Makes you immune to damage for a while.

Whirlwind Sprint (Whirlwind - Fury - Tempest)

Location: Dead Men’s Respite, Volskygge, High Hrothgar (The Way of the Voice)

Use to reach otherwise inaccessible places and to quickly evade attacks or catch up with fleeing enemies.


Character Creation

Female High Elf

Pick female as the sex for your character as there are more male humanoids than females to fight in Skyrim so the 10% damage bonus against the opposite sex from Agent of Dibella gets more use. All Dwemer Automatons count as Male.


Attribute Distribution

Place attribute points at 1 / 1 / 0. At level 65 which is required for all the perks the attributes are:

Spell Level Description
Candlelight Novice Creates a hovering light that lasts for 60 seconds
Detect Life Adept Nearby living creatures, but not undead, machines or daedra, can be seen through walls
Telekinesis Adept Can pull an object to you from distance. Add it to your inventory or throw it
Waterbreathing Adept Can breathe under water for 60 seconds. Stand in water and cast to level Alteration.
Detect Dead Expert Nearby dead can be seen through walls

From the Bow of Shadows quest that you get from the steward in Dragonsreach you can get the Detect Life spell book at the stables once you have read the ledger in Acradia's Cauldron. Cast this in the market during the day to level Alteration.


Conjuration

Spell Level Description
Soul Trap Apprentice If a target dies within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem.

Soul Trap is used to level Conjuration and also fill soul gems.


Destruction

Spell Level Description
Flames Novice A gout of fire inflicting a base damage of 8 points of fire damage per second.
Sparks Novice Lightning that does 8 points of shock damage to Health and Magicka per second.
Lightning Bolt Apprentice A bolt of lightning that does 25 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.
Thunderbolt Expert A Thunderbolt that does 60 points of shock damage to Health and half that to Magicka.

Destuction will level slowly as Frenzy spells are you main way to kill enemies except for when you face a single enemy where they are Destruction spells are used to finish them. Faralda at the College of Winterhold can be used to train this up to level 90.


Illusion

Spell Level Description
Clairvoyance Novice Shows the path to your current goal.
Courage Novice Target won't flee for 60 seconds, and gets some extra health and stamina.
Fury Novice Creatures and people up to level 6 will attack anything nearby for 30 seconds.
Frenzy Adept Creatures and people up to level 14 will attack anyone nearby for 60 seconds.
Frenzy Rune Adept Targets up to level 20 that fail to resist are frenzied for 30 seconds.
Frenzy Rune Adept Targets up to level 20 that fail to resist are frenzied for 30 seconds.
Invisibility Expert Caster is invisible for 30 seconds. Activating an object or attacking will break the spell.
Mayhem Master Creatures and people up to level 25 will attack anyone nearby for 60 seconds

Courage can be used to level illusion when not in combat and Fury when in combat.


Restoration

Spell Level Description
Healing Novice Heals the caster 10 points per second
Fast Healing Apprentice Heals caster by 50 points
Close Wounds Adept Heals caster by 100 points
Grand Healing Expert Heals everyone close to the caster 200 points. Does not affect atronachs, machines or undead

You can start using better healing spells as the cost reduction perks are acquired but I pretty much just used Healing and Fast Healing before getting enchanted gear.


Enchantments

The effects listed below are based upon 100 Enchanting skill, all the enchanting perks in the build and with a set of enchanted crafting gear. Read my guide on making crafting gear if you are not familiar with it.

Summary of combined effects

Destruction and Illusion spells cost 61% less to cast.
Alteration, Conjuration and Restoration spells cost 15% less Magicka.
Health is increased by 115 points.
Magicka is increased by 165 points.
Magicka regenerates 100% faster.
Sneaking is 75% easier.
Heavy Armor Skill is increased by 46 points.
Magic resistance of 37%.
46 points more carrying capacity.

With the Sallowed Regent Black Book the magnitude of all enchantments can be increased.

Please note that Black Books can only be used on Solstheim.

The magnitude of the enchantments can be further increased by equipping 4 pieces of Azhidal's gear.


Alchemy

All the details for the potions and poisons are based on having all the listed alchemy perks, Alchemy at 100 and a set of crafting gear.

Potion of Fortify Health

Restore Health 266 points restored

All of the ingredients can be found in or around Whiterun.


Potion of Fortify Carry Weight

Ingredients Mora Tapinella, Scaly Pholiota & Steel-Blue Entoloma
Effects Fortify Carry Weight Carrying capacity increases by 170 for 300 seconds
Regenerate Stamina Stamina regenerates 213% faster for 300 seconds
Fortify Illusion Illusion spells are 170% stronger for 60 seconds
Restore Magicka Restores 266 points of Magicka

All the Mora Tapinella you need are on the way from Helgen to Whiterun. Scaly Philiota can be found near the Alchemists Hut if you travel towards Ivarstead from Helgen. Steel-Blue Entoloma are from Khajiit merchants.


Potion of Fortify Destruction

Ingredients Glowing Mushroom & Nightshade
Effects Fortify Destruction 170% more damage for 60 seconds

All the glowing mushrooms you need are at the farm. Nightshade are by the halls of the dead in large settlements.


Potion of Fortify Enchanting

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Stoneflower Petals & Snowberries
Effects Fortify Enchanting 85% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Stoneflower Petals are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Snowberries are abundant near Windhelm.


Potion of Fortify Smithing

Ingredients Dreugh Wax/Gold Kanet & Glowing Mushrooms
Effects Fortify Smithing 213% stronger for 30 seconds

Dreugh Wax and Gold Kanet are only available from Khajiit caravans. Some travel between Whiterun and Markarth. Glowing Mushrooms are in Falmer caves.
